Arthritis Foundation Exercise Programs - 1:00-2:00 pm - Camp Coch, Goshen
Goshen Rec. Dept. Offers Arthritis Foundation Exercise Programs- Reduced Pain and Stiffness Among Many Benefits
The Goshen Recreation Department will again offer the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program starting September 26th at Camp Cochipianee, 291 Beach Street in town. The FREE classes will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-2pm. The program involves low-impact and joint-safe exercises in a regimen developed by physical therapists specifically for people with arthritis. Studies show the program has helped decrease arthritis pain and reduce stiffness while increasing flexibility and range of motion.

Jill Maeder, MS, PT, a Goshen resident, will teach the program. She is a physical therapist and certified instructor with the Arthritis Foundation.

During the six weeks, participants will go through a series of gentle movements and activities designed to increase mobility and range of motion. This low-impact class is suitable for every fitness level and can be taken either sitting down or standing.

"In addition to reducing pain and stiffness, the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program helps people with arthritis keep joints flexible, maintain muscle strength and build overall stamina" said Sue Nesci of the Arthritis Foundation, Northern and Southern New England Chapters.

Pre-registration is necessary and enrollment is limited. These free classes are open to non-residents. Call Dale Ives at the Goshen Rec. Dept. at 860-491-2249 to register. Before starting any exercise program, always check with your physician.

Litchfield Park and Rec has started a Pilates class with instructor Martha Zaharevich,PT Martha has been teaching Pilates for several years. She is classically trained and certified to teach beginner, intermediate and advanced levels of mat, reformer, cadillac/tower, and chair in addition to barrel and small apparatus. Martha received a BA in dance from UC Santa Barbara and a Master of Physical Therapy from UMDNJ and Rutgers University.
Class rates are $12 for mat classes and $95 for a 10 week session. Classes are from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays at the Bantam Gym with classes on-going. "Drop-in" Volleyball - 7:30-9:00 pm - LIS Gym
The Litchfield Parks and Recreation Department is again hosting "Drop-in" Volleyball on Tuesday nights at the Litchfield Intermediate School Gym from 7:30 p.m until 9:00 p.m. Opening night for the season is Sept. 20th. All interested players should just show up ready to play. Teams are selected on a weekly basis and will rotate around the courts to try and play all other teams in the gym that night. The cost should not be a problem as it is free to the public. Men and women of all ages and abilities can have lots of fun and get some exercise during those long winter months by playing "Drop-in" Volleyball. All participants must sign a waiver to play.
