Poppy's Fishing Derby in Goshen
The 21st Annual Poppy's Fishing Derby sponsored by the Goshen Recreation Department was held on May 12th on the town-owned property on East Street South. It was a perfect sunny day but unfortunately the stocked trout donated by the Kobylenski family were not as cooperative as in past years.
The 47 participants and their families were treated to a free hot breakfast prepared at the river's edge by members of the Goshen Sportsmen.
Third grader, Jordan Schaer caught the very first fish and the largest of the day. It was a whopper! It weighed in at a pound and a half!
Jordan placed first in the largest single fish category followed by Nate Corey 2nd , Xavier Marshall 3rd and Alex Teran 4th.
Trophies for the combined weight of up to five fish went to: first place Anthony D'Agostino, 2nd Nicholas Drouin and 3rd James Wheeler.
The derby is named for former Goshen First Selectman Richard Kobylenski, who provided the trout each year until his passing. His nephew Dan Kobylenski and other family members are keeping the tradition alive going forward.

Volunteerism, volunteering, volunteer - what are they? The definition of the three begins with "giving up of your time and services to those who may benefit from it" and "a concern for the welfare of others." It goes on to say "a good deed" and "doing this with no expectation of pay or monetary gain."
Volunteerism is looking at "what can I put into it", rather than "what am I going to get out of it." A volunteer looks outside of themselves - "what can be learned" and "who can be helped?" Volunteering is a rewarding experience - the gratitude, accomplishment and respect one feels.
The influence a volunteer has to offer is an example to others to give up personal time and to help others or the community in some small way. Volunteering has an impact on our community; a good impact and a healthy impact. Volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together.
Goshen is a thriving community and will continue to thrive because of its volunteers in every organization in it.
If you see a volunteer today, be sure to thank him or her. Without their service, we could not run all the amazing programs we do for our town. Always remember volunteers deserve our Respect!

Arthritis Foundation Exercise Programs
Reduced Pain and Stiffness Among Many Benefits
Starting September 26th at Camp Cochipianee, 291 Beach Street, Goshen
The FREE classes will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-2pm.
The Goshen Recreation Department will again offer the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program starting September 26th at Camp Cochipianee, 291 Beach Street in town. The FREE classes will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-2pm. The program involves low-impact and joint-safe exercises in a regimen developed by physical therapists specifically for people with arthritis. Studies show the program has helped decrease arthritis pain and reduce stiffness while increasing flexibility and range of motion.
Jill Maeder, MS, PT, a Goshen resident, will teach the program. She is a physical therapist and certified instructor with the Arthritis Foundation.
During the six weeks, participants will go through a series of gentle movements and activities designed to increase mobility and range of motion. This low-impact class is suitable for every fitness level and can be taken either sitting down or standing.
"In addition to reducing pain and stiffness, the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program helps people with arthritis keep joints flexible, maintain muscle strength and build overall stamina" said Sue Nesci of the Arthritis Foundation, Northern and Southern New England Chapters.
Pre-registration is necessary and enrollment is limited. These free classes are open to non-residents. Call Dale Ives at the Goshen Rec. Dept. at 860-491-2249 to register. Before starting any exercise program, always check with your physician.
