Artist Banjie Getsinger Nicholas at UConn Torrington
Silver Linings: Literal/Metaphorical
On Thursday, March 22nd at 7:00 pm, award-winning artist Banjie Getsinger Nicholas discussed the sources of her work and her creative process in the Whitson Gallery at the University of Connecticut Torrington campus. Silver Linings: Literal/Metaphorical, is on exhibit at the University of Connecticut Torrington campus' Brick Wall Space Gallery and the Whitson Gallery from February 27 - May 11, 2012.  The exhibit and event are free and open to the public.

Banjie Getsinger Nicholas' artistic focus is in nature, and she captures exquisite details of trees, mosses, insects, and birds. She says, "Birds, especially young birds raised during my 20 years as a wild bird rehabilitator, feathers, nests and eggs are frequent symbols appearing in my work."

The mediums used by Banjie, egg tempera and silverpoint, are two of the oldest mediums used by artists through the centuries. Egg tempera paint is made from ground dry pigments mixed with egg yolk and silverpoint drawings are done with a thin silver wire. The panels on which she works are coated with multiple layers of marble dust and rabbit skin glue. These materials are little changed from those used by the old masters centuries ago. Banjie says, "Their 'organic' nature adds to the pleasure of the process for me. Through these paintings and drawings I maintain my personal connection to the natural world and hope some of the reverence I feel will connect with viewers of the work."

Located at the University of Connecticut Torrington campus, the ARTS Project promotes an environment that celebrates the visual arts. Conceived as a sister project to the Litchfield County Writers Project, the purpose of the ARTS Project is to present exhibits in both the Whitson Gallery and the Brick Wall Exhibition Space, sponsor artists' talks, and develop programs that showcase individual artists as well as serve as a vehicle to explore the creative process. All our exhibitions and events are free and open to the public. No reservations are needed. Artists' talks are held in the Whitson Gallery at the UCONN Torrington campus, 855 University Drive, Torrington, CT, 06790. The Brick Wall Gallery is open to the public Monday - Friday 8:00am - 9:00pm. The Whitson Gallery is open to the public Thursday, 5:00 - 9:00pm, Fridays 8:30-4:00pm and by appointment.
